I found this piece of art at an antique store the other day.  While I am sure that it couldn't have been 1889 that this was done, but instead is so interesting!  Shelf mushrooms have been used as canvases for thousands of years.  I looked up the process to doing this type of art, and it is a very immediate piece of work.  You pick the fungi, and etch into it with a sharp stick, quill, or other instrument.  Work quickly, before it gets too stiff!  When it dries, the scratches in the surface will darken and look just like ink!
