This is a Red-bellied Woodpecker. We have a lot of them in our woods. They make a LOT of noise in the mornings, tapping on trees to find their breakfast. We have so many different kinds of woodpeckers here that I often get them mixed up....I was just SURE this was a Ladderback Woodpecker, but no....Why call it red-bellied when it is clearly a red-headed bird? Because there is already a Red-headed Woodpecker that is smaller with a completely red head, not just a cap!
